LIFE AT DHS

Music at DHS

Our music programs deliver students the opportunity to learn, appreciate and enjoy music with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

Learning Music with Dandenong high School

At Dandenong High School, we pride ourselves on our approach to teaching music.  Our program features three interconnected components – classroom music lessons, ensemble, and instrumental tuition.

All students participate in classroom music during Year 7 and 8 where they develop their musical understanding, learn to play an instrument and perform for various audiences.  Students can choose to further develop their skills in music at Year 9 and 10 where they develop their own musical voice and style, learn to play in different groups and create their own musical compositions.  The school also offers VCE Music which can be chosen in Years 10, 11 and 12.

Performing

Students can choose to participate in the ensemble program to enhance their musical understanding.  The school offers a variety of performance groups including String Ensemble, Piano Ensemble, Rock Band, Orchestra, Guitar Ensemble, Choir and Wind Band.  These groups rehearse each week both after school and during class, and perform at a variety of events including Music Concerts, assemblies, discovery nights, as well as community events in the local area.

Instrument Tuition

Students are encouraged to take part in instrumental tuition – these lessons allow students to grow as musicians by developing their technical and performance skills on their specific instrument.  The school offers a variety of instruments, including violin, cello, guitar, bass, clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, piano, percussion (including drum kit), and has a strong vocal and singing program.  Lessons are held weekly and enhance the learning experiences of both ensemble and classroom music.

The school offers a variety of string, brass and woodwind instruments to hire from the school.  Additionally, a hire-purchase scheme can be arranged for any instrument upon request.

Why Music?

The Music Department prepare and present annual events such as the House Choral Competition, Winter Concert, and International Spring Fest, as well as supporting school events such as the Festival of Arts, Discovery Nights and school production. These opportunities provide an authentic learning experience for students and allows the school to connect with parents and the wider community.

Awards and Scholarships

The DHS Ex- Students Association offers The Edna Dawson Vukmirovic Music Scholarship each year. Criteria used to select students include technical ability and musicality on their instrument, potential for growth, attendance and attitude at regular instrumental lessons, participation in DHS music ensembles and leadership potential. This scholarship is by audition only.

The school also offers the Bruce Raymont Music Award to a senior music student each year.  In honour of a past principal of the school, this award celebrates dedicated and successful musicians at the school.  The recipient performs at Awards Night in December and receives a gift to encourage them in their musical future
